Dr. Darren Richards

Dr. Darren Richards

Owner and Veterinarian

Dr. Darren Richards achieved his Doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 2001, graduating magna cum laude. He earned his bachelor's degree summa cum laude in Animal Science/Pre-Veterinary Studies from the University of Maine at Orono. Dr. Richards is a native of downeast Maine and graduated from Machias Memorial High School in 1994. He is a member of the Maine Veterinary Medial Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Animal Hospital Association. He has a dog (Roma) and one cat (Blackberry). His favorite pastimes include camping, fishing, four-wheeling, reading, weight lifting, and mixed martial arts.

Dr. Melanie McEwen

Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Melanie McEwen earned her doctorate from Atlantic Veterinary College in 2016. Prior to veterinary school she received her bachelors degree in Animal Science/Veterinary medicine from the University of Maine at Orono. She grew up in Old Town, Maine and currently lives with her husband and their lab (Butters) and cat (Trinity). In her free time she enjoys cooking and baking, spending time outdoors, and spending time with her friends and family.

Dr. Jana Zwetsloot

Dr. Jana Zwetsloot

Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Jana Zwetsloot or “Dr. Z,” grew up in Bucksport, Maine, but has strong ties to western and southern Maine. She graduated from the University of Prince Edward Island in 2016 and since then has been working in Maine as a mixed animal practitioner. When not working she spends most of her time outside with her husband, son, dog, cat, and chickens. She also enjoys running, snowboarding, traveling, bird watching, and bad sci-fi.  Dr. Z, Dr. McEwen, and Dr. Smith were fellow classmates at UPEI where they developed a strong friendship and together they make a fantastic veterinary trio.

Dr. Amanda Smith

Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Amanda Smith grew up in Searsport, Maine, and attended the University of Prince Edward Island. Since graduating from veterinary school in 2016, Dr. Smith has been practicing mixed animal medicine in Central Maine (at Hometown Veterinary Care where she continues to work two days/week). Neat fact: Dr. Smith and our own doctors McEwen and Zwetsloot all attended and graduated veterinary school together where they formed lasting friendships and together they make a fantastic veterinary trio.  Outside of work, Dr. Smith can be found horseback riding, hiking, gardening, and spending time with her husband, pets, friends, and family.

Anne DeWitt

Anne DeWitt

Practice Manager and Licensed Veterinary Technician

Anne DeWitt achieved an associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology from the University of Maine in 2001. She has been a practicing veterinary technician since that time and became Practice Manager in January 2013. Anne currently resides in Madison with her family and her cats, Sapphire and Tommy. She enjoys reading, cross-stitching, attempting crochet and spending time with her family. She is involved in a sign language choir called Singing Hands of Harmony where she performs for local nursing homes, churches, and other groups.

Lori Atwood

Lori Atwood

Licensed Veterinary Technician

Lori Atwood grew up in the Madison/Anson area. She achieved an associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology from the University of Maine in 2004. Lori has worked as a veterinary technician in the surrounding area since graduation. She currently resides in North Anson with her husband, son, daughter, and her two basset hounds, Bruno and Bailey; a German Shorthair Pointer named Chester and a black tiger cat named Franklin. She enjoys cooking and four-wheeling.

Kathy Ametti

Kathy Ametti

Licensed Veterinary Technician

Kathy Ametti has lived and worked as a licensed veterinary technician in Maine for 22 years before joining the staff of the Madison Animal Hospital. She received her degree in Veterinary Technology from Newbury College in Massachusetts. She lives in Skowhegan with her family, and three adopted cats. In her free time she enjoys gardening, reading, exercising, and watching baseball.

Cassidy Burbank

Cassidy Burbank

Veterinary Assistant

Cassidy Burbank is from Lexington Township where she lives with her family on their farm with horses, chickens, and her two black labs, Rockii and Dozer. Cassidy is currently in school studying veterinary technology. In her free time, she enjoys coon and coyote hunting with her family and friends along with their dogs, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, 4-wheeling, and spending time with her boyfriend.

Sarah Mumma

Customer Service Representative

Sarah Mumma lives in Skowhegan with her husband and their children and her menagerie of pets, which includes 3 dogs, 2 cats, a rabbit, fish, hermit crabs, and 10 parakeets. In her spare time, she likes to volunteer at the assisted living facilities making crafts with the residents. She enjoys making crafts of her own and selling her creations at craft sales.
